Petoskey Warrant Checks
Petoskey runs its own public safety department. Emmet County runs the courts, and that split sets the order of any warrant check.
- Call the Petoskey Department of Public Safety at (231) 347-2500 and ask which court holds the case.
- Search the 90th District Court route on the state case search by name or case number.
- Call the 90th District Court at (231) 348-1750 for a traffic, ordinance, or misdemeanor matter.
- Call the 57th Circuit Court at (231) 348-1711 if the charge was filed as a felony.
- Call the Sheriff's enforcement line at (231) 439-8900 if a county deputy served the order.
A city office cannot recall a court order. Treat anything the Petoskey DPS tells you as routing, not a final answer. Note: The Petoskey department is a public safety office, and its records counter is not a warrant window.
Petoskey DPS and the 2023 Warrant Counts
The Petoskey Department of Public Safety at 101 East Lake Street handles police, fire, and EMS in one office. Its 2023 annual report is the only local document in Emmet County that publishes warrant numbers.
That report also lists 20 sworn officers, five part-time public-safety officers, and one on-call firefighter. Those figures describe a year of Petoskey work, not a current list of open orders.
Policing and Courts in Petoskey
Two offices matter most for a Petoskey warrant question. The police department writes the report; the court a few blocks away holds the case and controls the order.

What Petoskey Warrant Counts Do Not Mean
A count of 36 felony warrants in a 2023 report records work the Petoskey department completed that year. It is not a live list. It does not say which of those orders remain open today. People quote numbers like these as if they were a roster. They are not. The report counts criminal paperwork the city handled, while the underlying cases sit in the District or Circuit files. Note: A warrant cleared in 2023 still appears in that year's count, so an old report's figure says nothing about today.
Warrants in Petoskey: The Main Types
Petoskey cases involve four kinds of warrants. Every one of them starts in the Division Street courthouse.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic warrant | Unpaid city ticket or missed traffic date | 90th District Court |
| Ordinance warrant | Unresolved Petoskey code violation | 90th District Court |
| Bench warrant | Missed date or unmet court obligation | The court holding the case |
| Arrest warrant | Complaint and probable cause after an investigation | District or Circuit Court |
A search warrant plays by different rules. It authorizes a search of a place or a person, not a self-check tool for Petoskey residents. The affidavit behind it can stay sealed while an investigation runs.
Petoskey Traffic Warrants Go to District Court
A Petoskey traffic ticket belongs to district court. The 90th District Court handles tickets and civil infractions for all of Emmet County, including citations written by city officers. Michigan Court Rule 6.615 lays out what follows a missed citation date: an order to show cause, and in some circumstances a bench warrant. Ask the court whether your Petoskey ticket has reached that stage before you pay anything. The county's traffic warrant page walks through the same process.
Petoskey Warrant Records: What They Show
A Petoskey case file follows the county format, because the court keeps it rather than the city.
| Case number | The court's identifier for the file, and the number to quote on the phone. |
|---|---|
| Charge or offense | What the citation or complaint alleges. |
| Issuing court | The 90th District Court, or the 57th Circuit Court for a felony. |
| Warrant event | An entry for a warrant, a show-cause order, or a return. |
| Bond or fine | Set case by case; the county publishes no bond schedule. |
| Status | Open, recalled, or served, as the court records it. |
No Petoskey Warrant Portal Exists
The city publishes no online warrant list, and the DPS annual report does not work as one. A search for a Petoskey warrant page leads either to the county courts or to private sites with no official standing. The Sheriff posts no roster either. That leaves the court file as the reliable record. The county courts page routes the public to the state case search instead, which is the same starting point a Petoskey resident would use for any other Emmet County case.
Petoskey Warrants and Emmet County
Petoskey is the county seat. Its city cases run through the same two courts as the rest of Emmet County. The city keeps no separate warrant system to check.
Warrant flow: Petoskey Department of Public Safety › 90th District or 57th Circuit Court › Sheriff service › recall or return
Everything beyond the city line, including the county-wide channels and the state systems, is covered in the Emmet County warrant records overview. One routing fact trips people up. The Emmet County Clerk holds Circuit Court files and states plainly that it does not hold District Court files. A misdemeanor or traffic question belongs with the 90th District, not the clerk's counter.
Inside the Petoskey DPS Office
The Petoskey DPS administrative office processes criminal paperwork, accident reports, court records, and complaints, and it fields public records requests. Its 2023 report counted 100 FOIA requests for the year. A records request to the city reaches city police records only. A court file is a separate request to the court that holds it. Because the department also runs fire and emergency medical service, ask for the police records side when you call about a Petoskey warrant.
Accessing Petoskey Warrant Records
Michigan court records are public unless a statute, a rule, or a court order closes them. Michigan Court Rule 8.119 sets that default. Inspection in Petoskey or anywhere in the state carries no ordinary fee, and copies can be charged at actual cost.
Key Rules:
Michigan Freedom of Information Act - county records are open on request, with five business days to respond and ten business days to appeal.
Michigan Court Rule 8.119 - trial court case records are public unless a rule, statute, or order restricts them.
Juvenile and probate matters - protected files stay out of public view, and an absence online proves nothing.
Petoskey Warrant Records vs DPS Files
A police file and a court file answer different questions. The Petoskey department report describes what an officer saw and did. The court file shows the charge, the warrant event, and the current status of the order. Ask the city for the report and the court for the warrant status. Neither office holds the other's record, and one will not speak for the other.
